Three angle gloss meter - see gloss changes under the right angle. In order to obtain differences clearly over the whole range from matte to high gloss, three measurement geometries were specified in international glossmeter standards. Each geometry is optimized for a specific gloss range.
The micro-TRI-gloss combines 20°, 60° and 85° in one glossmeter - having three geometries in one unit allows you to be in compliance with international standards and to quickly recognize quality variations.

Gloss Measurement
Gloss measurement is an important factor in quality control to guarantee a consistent and uniform gloss of any product. The visual perception is depending on the observer, illumination and viewing conditions as well as on material and product properties. In order to measure gloss objectively instrumental measurement is performed with a gloss meter. Dependent on the gloss level and the application different geometries and functions are needed. The following article reviews visual perception of gloss, measurement principle of a gloss meter, when to use which measurement geometry and gives practical hints for special applications and how to deal with limitations.

Uniform and consistent gloss are an essential quality criterion for a variety of products. Therefore, gloss needs to be objectively measured. Only what can be objectively measured, can be controlled and can be optimized which is of importance in product development as well as in production control. Especially in case of multi-component products a uniform gloss is an expression of “high quality”. Variations in gloss look like something is wrong and the end-user will perceive it as a defect. Therefore, gloss limits and tolerances are defined based on application and customer expectations.
