Korea National Skills Competition

wave-scan and cloud-runner - the objective judge for the automotive painting category

BYK Gardner - Korea has solidified its position as a trusted technology partner for the highly anticipated Korea National Skills Competition as it marked its fourth consecutive year of providing technical and expert support in the official judging of the competition.

The annual event, jointly organized by Korea’s employment and education ministries together with local governments, aims to create jobs for young people and contribute to the development of national industries by nurturing outstanding skilled workers. Participants who garner the highest scores become eligible to represent Korea at the World Skills Competition. They are also given sought-after employment opportunities with key sponsoring companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, LG Innotek, LG Display, Posco, GS E&C, Lotte group, CJ FOODVILLE, LS Mtron, TYM, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hanhwa Aerospace, INNOBIZ, etc.

In this year's edition alone, a total of 1,800 participants, mainly students from vocational high schools and universities across the country, competed in the 50 job categories that included industrial robotics, mechanical design, and automotive painting.

BYK-Gardner Korea, together with its sales agent ABNEXO, started providing support in the judging process as a management committee member for the instrument section of the automotive painting category during the 2020 National Skills Competition.

Prior to that, a lot of controversy arose because the competition was decided solely by the judges' visual evaluation. With the introduction of BYK-Gardner's instruments, competitors have since been ranked based on judges' visual evaluation scores as well as the measured values from the instruments.

Evaluation categories currently include color matching, film thickness, orange peel, gloss, mottling, design painting.

Orange peel and mottling are evaluated using BYK Gardener's wave-scan and cloud-runner.

For color matching, paint supply and matching are evaluated by the paint companies KCC and Noroo with their CCM system.

According to Mr. Myung-geun Lee, who has been the head of the judging committee in the automotive painting category since 2019, evaluating using BYK instruments provides great advantages in judging the competition as subjective results are established as objective results.

Currently, 60% of the appearance evaluation criteria consist of wave scan and cloud runner measurement results and 40% of visual evaluation results.

Mr. Lee explained that when instrument-based evaluation was added, the opposition was strong at first, but now the responses of instructors, students, and judges have become very positive.

With the addition of instruments evaluation, the number of arguments has decreased and the overall evaluation time has been shortened compared to when only visual evaluation was conducted.

Finally, he suggested that providing educational institutions with instruments at academic prices would further expand the utilization of instrument-based evaluation.

The proportion of instrument measurement results in the judging criteria has increased over the years, and participating organizations see the high value of objective judgment using measurement data. As a result, technical high schools have started to equip their laboratories with BYK-Gardner instruments. Sales of wave-scan and cloud-runner to technical high schools continue to increase for this application. Beyond sales, an intangible impact has also been created as students are getting familiar with BYK Gardner’s instruments in their education phase and experiencing their use and significance first-hand.

BYK-Gardner Korea remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the development of young talents in the industry and building long term, trusted relationships that our customers value.
