PELT: The Reference for Multilayer Film Thickness Measurement
PELT provides a non-destructive measurement solution for multi-layer film thicknesses all within a single measurement.
PELT gauges are essentially acoustic microscopes. Very high frequency ultra-short pulses of ultrasound are used to resolve and measure layer coating thickness.
PELT gauges are the highest resolving power ultrasonic thickness gauge on the market. This is achieved via a combination of unique high frequency transducer technology and high frequency ultrasonics.
The ultrasound technology allows non-destructive measurement on a wide variety of substrates – with highest accuracy.
Steel - Carbon Fiber - Aluminum - Rubber - Composites - Glass - Plastics - Wood
With PELT, there is no need to change transducers for different substrate materials.

PELT gauges use advanced ultrasonic technology to achieve highest resolution and capability to resolve very thin layers as well as adjacent layers with similar material composition.
Resolution: 0.5 to 0.33 micron (0.02 to 0.013 mils)
Calibrated Accuracy: ± 1.3 microns (+/- 0.05 mils) or ± 2% of the coating thickness, whichever is greater.
R&R gauge study results: < 10%
for solvent and waterborne coatings with typical process variation

Film thickness variation has a significant impact on paint durability, color and appearance harmony. Accurate monitoring will avoid excess material usage
PELT is the reference in automotive for multi-layer film thickness measurement: BYK-µPELT 5 with BYK-PELT-Transducer MB
oatings on plastic parts could only be measured accurately using destructive methods combined with high-cost microscopy – time consuming analysis which required expertise and not a solution for process QC.
The new high frequency PELT transducer technology can measure multi-layer film builds on any composite material and clearly detect the thin adhesion promoter layer – a big time and cost saver as tested parts are no longer scrapped.
Now production process control is possible as many parts and locations can be measured directly at the line.

PELT gauge measurements help monitor the critical zinc protection layer on shipping containers. The zinc layer will avoid corrosion caused by exposure to sea water.
These film builds are unique and challenging because of the presence of a blasted/profiled substrate. PELT gauges can be easily configured to accurately measure these applications.

PELT Technology can take measurements on thick or attenuative coating layers. Wind turbine blades have a wide range of layer thickness to support their performance from tip to base and edge to edge.
The PELT gauge can accurately measure these thicknesses ranges. With smart-chart software, the measurement data can be reported for the various check zones’ specifications.

PELT measurements can be fully automated with BYK-PELT Robotic.
Robotic PELT measurements eliminate location variability and human error, allowing for repeatable, objective measurements from the exact same locations time after time.
With the Robotic PELT, it allows you to monitor and correct near out-of-tolerance conditions and prevent film thickness-related issues from disrupting production.
Robotic PELT can measure hundreds of points across dozens of finished bodies every single day.
